Broken glass and how to dispose of it quickly and safely

How to dispose of broken glass safely. Get rid of unwanted glass from your house

There is a correct way and wrong way to do anything.

Getting rid of smashed pieces of glass the wrong way could cause injury.

Here in this article I explain a simple and quick way to dispose of that broken glass safely.

It’s bad enough breaking a mirror or the glass from your favourite picture frame without having to clean up the broken glass as well.

So no matter how annoyed you are don’t give yourself more trouble or worse a painful injury, by losing the head and dumping the glass inappropriately. It will come back to haunt you!

If you are lucky enough to have a garden you might be tempted to put the shattered pieces up against a wall behind the shed and hope they will somehow disappear with time. Sorry NOT going to happen any time soon.

How NOT to dispose of broken glass.

Right by now you have got over the shock and anger and calmed down enough to be sensible. You could get some newspaper and wrap the broken glass in it and maybe even go to the trouble of putting that neat little parcel into another bag.

Then throw it into your bin bag or trash can. You could and if you listen to most peoples’ advice that’s probably exactly what you would do. Well DON’T

Broken glass needs to be disposed of safely

Broken glass if not disposed of safely is an accident waiting to happen

The glass will cut through the paper and the bag. You’re not making it safe at all. The only thing you’ve done is camouflage a very dangerous weapon and created an accident waiting to happen.

I don’t know about you but I know on the day the rubbish is collected I sort out my bags and try to get in as much as possible. How do I do this, the same as everyone else I’m sure. I push down the previous day’s helpings of rubbish.

And guess what, no matter how annoyed and angry you were at the time I can guarantee you that you would have completely forgotten about the broken glass.

Yes the one you had so carefully wrapped up in that useless paper is just waiting to jump out from its hiding place in the bin and stab you. Or if it’s not you it will be a member of your family or worse still, the bin collector.

Then you’d have some headache with the law suit that would follow! Or worse still again, can it get any worse you ask, well yes!

The Bin collectors could refuse to collect your rubbish from then on. What a mess that would be, on ALL levels!

Ok how to avoid all that.

Broken glass is dangerous

Place the broken glass safely in the cardboard box.
Place the broken glass safely in the cardboard box.

Let's do this right and dispose of the broken glass safely

How to dispose of broken glass safely

You will need:

A piece of cloth. The thicker the better. Size will depend on the amount of glass.

A hammer.

A box with a lid.

Strong adhesive tape

Paper and red marker

Put the pieces of glass onto the cloth, wrap the cloth to cover the glass and gently, very gently, break the glass into smaller pieces.

A box with a lid? Where’s that coming from I can hear you ask. If you look around on the day you will find the perfect one fit for the job. As you can see in the photo below I emptied the remaining tea bags out of the box into my tea caddy and used that. Have a look in your own cupboard for other suitable boxes.

Most homes have their rubbish sorted for recycling and would have a recycling bin for paper and cardboard. Have a look there. Or open your freezer. Pizza boxes are perfect.

Lift up the cloth and put it into your box. If the box is a lot bigger and has a large gap then it would be advisable to put another piece of cloth on top of that to keep it secure. Close the box and seal it with strong adhesive.

On the large white piece of paper write the words in red. ‘Danger. Broken glass in box.’

Attach your danger sign onto the box. Put on a high shelf until bin day. Put a reminder beside your bin so you don’t forget to place it inside the bin for collection. So there it is. That is how you dispose of broken glass safely.

Broken glass is dangerous so dispose of it carefully

So there you have it. That is an easy, safe and quick way to get rid of any broken glass you may have in the house or office.

Important information. I often just put broken glass in a cardboard box and vacuum up the specks. I see now that is probably not a great idea.

My brother-in law used to put broken glass--even old jars and bottles into his portable cement mixer and tumble it into finite bits-- later he would mix it in with his sand, gravel and cement to make curbs and planter walls. Nothing to put in the trash. I know this is not practical for everyone, but it works.

Mixing glass with food like the bread is a bad idea. Remember nature!: the animals could potentially SUFFER because of this as they are rummaging for food. Please DO NOT consider doing this!!!

Yes gail a very fair point you make here in your comment, thanks. I agree with you totally and have therefore deleted the video from this hub that gives this as a tip of how to dispose of broken glass safely.

It gets the job done but could be at the expense of wildlife so it is not something I would advocate either

Just broke a huge wall mirror... thank you for your tips of disposal, because I wouldn't want anybody to be hurt by my carelessness. I used all my old towels to wrap and put the glass in a box with big letters "BROKEN GLASS"... now I'm so happy because I get to buy all new towels... oh yeah & another wall mirror (wah wah).

Hi! I'm a new home owner, the previous owner had an outdated mirror design that coverd an entire wall in the living area, I took them down and stored them in my driveway not sure on how to dispose because of my fear of anyone getting hurt (tought of lawsuit) thank you sooooo much for the article.

Hey, great article, but I have an issue. My cat dropped a paper weight through my glass desk top, and the pieces are too large for my garbage bin, or for me to break easily. How should I handle them?
