History and invention
The calendar that we all use today was altered from the earlier Roman version started by Caesar and after his death finished in 46 BC.
It was not until 1752 that the United Kingdom decided to change it. Up till then there was an extra six hours added every year.
That is when the Leap year came in to being. On the 3rd September 1752 the date was changed to the 14th September.
Another major change that year was that the 25th March was no longer the first day of the year. This became 1st January.
It was the Romans who named the months, some of them after their Gods,
January
Named after the Roman God Janus. He was the God of doorways and passageways.
He looked backwards and forwards. This month has 31 days
February
Until 1752 this was the last month of the year so it was named after the Roman festival that took place in this month of purification.
The festival was called Februa and it was used for spiritual cleansing before the New Year.
This month has 28 days accept for a leap year when it has 29 days.
March
Named after the Roman God Mars. He was the God of Agriculture and War.
This month has 31 days.
April
This is named after the Latin word aperire, which means to open.
This signifies the opening of the buds and the month of growth after the winter.
This month has 30 days.
May
Named after the Roman Goddess Maia, the Goddess of growth of plants.
She was the daughter of the Roman God Atlas.
This month has 31 days.
June
Named after the Roman Goddess Juno who was the patron of women. She was the wife of Jupiter.
This month has 30 days.
July
Named after Julius Caesar in his honor in 44 BCE, the year of his assassination. It was the month he was born. It was originally called Quintilis which meant the fifth month.
The month of July was no longer the 5th month when the other months were added so it needed to be changed. This month has 31 days.
August
There was a similar problem with the month of August. It was originally called Sextilis which meant six. August was no longer the 6th month when the calendar was changed.
It was named after the Roman Emperor Augustus. This month has 31 days.
September
This was now the 9th month but the name meaning seven in Latin, septem, was kept.
This month has 30 days.
October
This was now the 10th month but the name meaning eight in Latin, octo, was kept.
This month has 30 days.
November
This month was now the 11th month but the name meaning nine in Latin, novem, was kept. This month has 30 days.
December
This month was now the 12th month but the name meaning ten in Latin, decem, was kept.
This month has 31 days.
The days of the week were similarly named
Monday
This day is named after the Moon.
Tuesday
This day is named after Tia, who is the Teutonic God of War.
Wednesday
This day is named after Woden. He is the God of War, poetry and wisdom.
Thursday
This day is named after the God Thor; he is the bringer of good luck.
Friday
This day is named after Frigg, the Goddess of love and healing.
Saturday
This day is named after the Roman God Saturn.
Sunday
This day is named after the sun.
These days calendars come in all sorts of shapes, colours, sizes and designs.
The way we live today makes it necessary for us to consult them all the time.
It had become an essential purchase rather than a luxury item at the beginning of each year.
But now you can use one free on your computer.
