I earn money writing articles as a part time business from home

This was one of the ways I wanted to make money online! So I joined a free writing site HubPages.

Did it work?

Yes! I am now here two years and make on average $250 to $350 a month writing online.

In two of those months last year I made $600 and $545 a month!

This article below outlines what I did after writing for a few months and not earning any money. I have been writing articles for over thirty years for magazines and newspapers.

But I found out that writing articles online was completely different.

I was only learning about SEO and other internet rules and I needed the help and encouragement. I did not make my first payout of $100 from Google Adsense for around seven months.

But once I had enough articles written they were earning me money every day as I continued to add hubs to my collection.

This is not a get rich quick scheme. It takes a lot of work and time.

If you like writing and want to earn a passive income then this is one of the best ways to earn money online from home.

Here is my diary of how I went about my new writing career for 30 days.

The first thing I did was to join the '60 Day challenge'

I had joined the free writing HubPages and some writers there had set themselves and others who wanted to join a challenge.

This was to write thirty articles in thirty days and spend the next thirty days advertising and back linking for the best Search Engine Optimization.

How I got on every day of the challenge is written down here

There were days when I was able to spend 12 to 15 hours writings two or three hubs and other days when I was so sick that I could not even turn on the computer. I managed to get the thirty articles written by the deadline. It was hard work but the feeling of accomplishment was awesome too.

I love writing and have been writing articles and non fiction for over thirty years. So what better way to earn money online from home than to write articles. I had online writing goals which I wanted to fufill in those 60 days.

As a new member of the writing site HubPages I was still learning how to increase how much money I earn from my articles. I had never heard of keywords or SEO or even Google AdSense for that matter before I joined HubPages.

I have had good success in getting my Irish history articles published in magazines. With the popularity of the internet I have be given the chance to get my articles read by people from all over the world.

The HubPages 60 day challenge is now over for me.

Would you like to join HubPages and take part in the next 60 day challenge? This diary will help you decide. So if you are interested in how I did a daily basis you can read all about my writing antics here.

My online writing goals

I am making some money from writing my articles with HubPages. But I want to earn more money from my writing and have thousands more people read my articles too.

I am very confident in my own writing ability. I have a passion for writing and have had since I was a little girl. I have years of experience of writing and getting published.

What I do not have is the knowledge or experience of earning money by writing articles online.

Earning $5,000 a month with Google Adsense

My writing diary of how I wrote 30 articles in 30 days

To optimise your presence on the internet the other important thing to learn is how to promote your articles and hubs online. This is the only way that your articles will be seen and read.

To earn money online from writing it is necessary to know about keywords, SEO and backlinks.

That is why I have decided to join the HubPages 60 day Challenge that a very experienced hubber Sunforged has set the rest of the HubPages writers. What is the HubPages 60 day Challenge and how can it help me and other hubbers to gain more knowledge and presence on the internet search engines.?

The HubPages 60 day challenge if accepted asks you to commit to writing 30 new hubs in 30 days.

You are also committing yourself to writing a Hublog of your activities oduring the 60dc2 like this one here. You explain why you want to accept the challenge and how you feel it will be of benefit to you.

You outline your online writing goals here too. You will also be asked to record your progress of the challenge. So once the challenge begins I will be recording my progress here. If you want to read how it is going for me then drop back again once the Challenge begins and see how I am getting on, you would be very welcome.

HubPages 60 day challenge Forum

There is also a dedicated forum for all HubPages hubbers who have accepted this challenge. Here you can visit and participate with other writers on the 60dc2.

You will get advice and help to carry you forward on those 30 days and with those 30hubs.

Also and very important I believe if you are getting a little bit disheartened by the enormity of taking up this challenge then you will get encouragement from your other hubbers on this exciting route to keep you writing those hubs.

30 Days of promotional efforts

After the 30 days of writing your 30 hubs the next phase of the challenge begins. This is the important learning part of the challenge for me. All hubbers on the challenge will be shown how to promote their articles and get those important readers to their hubs.

This is the part where I will be learning about new ways to promote my articles online. There will be special tools and expertise from experienced hubbers.

A fantastic new toolbar, which I have already installed for all the links and quick access to help if needed while on this very exciting new venture for myself and other hubbers.

How to get the best Titles for your articles

My reasons for joining the HubPages 60 day challenge

I love writing and know it is possible as a member of the HubPages writing site to earn a part time wage online. I still have a lot to learn about promotion and SEO. This is a very important side of this business that I still need to learn more about.

My online writing goals for the HubPages 60 day challenge

  • To learn all I can about promotion of my articles. This in turn will get my hubs out there and read by more people.
  • To earn more money from my part time job as an online writer. This is very important to me. Why? Because I have been working in jobs all my life just to earn a living and pay the bills. Writing is truly my passion. I have decided that I am going to earn a decent income writing online.
  • Get more readers for my Irish history articles. I know they will not earn me much money. But these articles are very important to me and therefore I want as many people all over the world to read them. I am fascinated by it and hope the reader is too. I would not be writing and talking in English as my first language if it were not for the history of my country, Ireland.
  • I would like to get to know more of the other writers on HubPages. I read the forums a lot but must admit I don’t participate much. I am a solitary person by nature and find it hard to join in any community. But the writers community here on HubPages is very helpful and extremely interesting. You all share my passion for writing so I look forward to getting to know you here on the 60 day challenge Forum.

Writing articles online to earn money

Source: L.M.Reid

Day 1.

Spent the last couple of days doing research for my Google hubs. I have decided on the five hubs related to Google that I am going to write for the challenge.

I have just finished and published my first hub. You can read it from this link here

Google Search. Search on Google for any information you want. Google it.

Day 2.

Just published my second hub. You can read it from this link below.

Google Sky, Google Moon, Google Mars and GoogleOcean are Google applications that are amazing, educational and fun.

I have also spent a few hours reading, commenting and enjoying a few of the hubs that other members of the 60 day challenge have published. I had started to read the hublogs again too and was enjoying reading how others were getting on. But I have to go to bed now for a rest, It is 5.55am here. So will finish reading them tomorrow.

Day 3

Not a very productive day for writing today because my Asthma was bad. So I didn’t get the third hub published. I did manage to read quite a few of the updated Hublogs of the rest of the team to see how everyone else was getting on.

Day 4

Managed to get some more research done on my Google articles today, but still not able to be creative to write them. If my Asthma is not too bad, maybe tomorrow.

I got the email from Sunforged though and was able to access the forum. I read his thread on the importance of rss feeds. It’s amazing how things work out. I have been studying about rss for ages. The idea behind it and how to do it properly has evaded me.

When I read sunforged thread it just all clicked together. So I was able to add the rss feeds of other hubbers on the challenge to my hubs and onto the rss sites that sunforged kindly listed in his rss hub.

Further down on that thread another hubber explained how to set up an rss feed on to Twitter.com so I was able to do that for the first time too. Learnt a lot today, very grateful and happy about that.

Day 5

My Asthma still not back under control but better. I have managed to get my third Google hub published finally. You can read it here.

Google Translate allows easy online translation of websites into 52 languages

I have read some more of the challenge team’s hubs and left comments. I plan to enter the forum now and have a look. If I have time I will visit some more of the teams hubs.

Day 6

I have been learning lots more today by reading the discussions on the 60dc2 forum and enjoying it. Read and commented on more hubs and checked in on a few of the hublogs to see how everyone is getting on.

Day 7

Where did this first week go to! Time really does fly when you are having fun. It is hard work mind you with studying and understanding so much information. Thank you to all the other hubbers on the challenge for help and advice received this week.

How to write an article online

Doctor Who articles

Day 1

Managed to get another hub on Google published today. I always feel a great deal of satisfaction when this is done. All the research and time seems worth it then. Here is my latest hub on Google.

Targeted Google ads help you earn money online

Day 2

I received a pleasant surprise in my HubPages email today. A reporter from the newspaper The Irish Examiner emailed me after reading my hub about TB in Ireland.

There is an outbreak of TB in a primary school in Cork so it is in the news. He asked for permission to use two of the photos in the hub and interviewed me about TB. The hub I wrote included interviews from my two aunts who both spent years in a TB hospital when they were 12 and 19 years old.

Another excellent day for learning. Spent most of the day going back on my hubs and changing things around. This was in order to maximise my chance of getting Google AdSense ads in the correct place on the hubs. Well worth the time spent.

Day 3

I am enjoying the 60dc2 forum and learning a lot there too. I feel like part of the team and get lots of help when I need it. I managed to get another Google hub published today.

I had to do quite a lot of research on this one though. Google really has so much to offer that I did not realise myself until I wrote this hub. You can read it here.

Create a Google Blog, display Google Adsense ads on it and earn money online from your Blog.

Day 4

Was in the forum sunforged suggested we write another hub combining all those in a particular category. This is a great idea and will do that in the next couple of days. I have started another category for the challenge.

This one is Doctor Who hubs. I love watching this science fiction TV series so these hubs will be a pleasure to write.

Day 5

My internet connection has been cutting out all day and driving me mad. Managed to publish two new hubs though so can’t be bad. These are on my next category in the 60 day challenge. Doctor Who.

You can read them here.

1, The last complete series of 13 episodes that David Tennant played The Doctor in the Doctor Who Television series

2. Doctor Who DVD Box Set: The Complete Specials with David Tennant.

Day 6

Read a lot of hubs from the 60dc2 team. I was also on the forum, I seem to learn something new from there every day which is grand. I also managed to get my third Doctor Who hub done and published tonight. The link is below.

David Tennant as The Doctor in the science fiction TV series Doctor Who.

Day 7

Have been writing all day and managed to get two more of the Doctor Who hubs done. That’s the last of them now for the challenge. I intend to continue with more of these hubs once the challenge is over. The time really does go very quickly when I am writing. Wish there were more hours in the day.

You can read the two latest Doctor Who hubs here.

1. Doctor Who, the second Series with David Tennant as the Doctor and Billie Piper as Rose

2. Doctor Who, the Third Series with David Tennant as The Doctor and Freema Agyeman as Martha.

Day 1.

I was going to leave the Irish history hubs I intend to write until the other categories in the 60 day challenge were finished.

I tend to get carried away with this subject and could run out of time to write the other hubs.

But I really want to write about the 1916 Easter Rising in Ireland and the Arbour Hill Memorial Park here.

I have enough materiel for many hubs but will limit myself to just six for the challenge and then write the others when it is over.

I have been reading the hubs of the other writers on the challenge. There is such a diverse selection of subjects that I am enjoying reading them and learning lots of new things.

Day 2.

Have been putting together the research I have for the Irish history hubs. It is hard to take only a few incidents out and turn them into readable articles.

I decided to write the first hub on the visit of President John F Kennedy to Ireland and Arbour Hill Memorial Park. I will use this as an anchor to explain who is buried there and why.

You can read this first Irish history hub I have written for the 60 day challenge here.

1. When the President of the United States of America was asked what was the highlight of his trip to Ireland he said. “The highlight? that was the memorial service at Arbour Hill!”

Day 3.

This is hard work but I am loving it. I worked through the night to finish two more Irish history hubs. I intended to use the first hub as an anchor and when I published it I realised that apart from the short summary of each of the fourteen men who were executed I had no hubs ready to upload into the links capsule.

I should have waited really and published the hubs together but once I have written an article I usually can’t wait to share it.

Here are the two hubs I published today.

2. James Connolly executed for his part in the 1916 Easter Rising and his body dumped in a mass grave at Arbour Hill Prison yard. This is his story.

3. Patrick Pearse and William Pearse, two brothers executed after the 1916 Easter Rising. They lie together in a mass grave in Arbour Hill. This is their story.

Day 4.

I have been so engrossed in getting these hubs published that I must admit I have been neglecting my other commitments on the 60 day challenge.

So I took a break from writing and visited the 60dc2 forum and did a bit of catching up with the team. I also read a good few of the team’s hubs and left comments.

Still haven’t answered all the people who were kind enough to read and leave comments on my own hubs but intend to concentrate on that tomorrow.

I did manage to get another Irish history hub published even if it was into the early hours of the morning. You can read it here

4. Edward Daly. Executed for his part in the 1916 Easter Rising. His body was thrown into a mass grave. He is remembered in Irish history at ArbourHillMemorial Park in Dublin. This is his story

Day 5.

Spent the whole day writing three more Irish history articles. These had already been researched and only needed to be put together into a readable form. It took me ages though.

Then I needed a break so read some of the 60 day challenge team hubs and I visited the forum. I have decided that these three will be the last Irish history hubs I will write until the challenge is over.

I need to concentrate on more commercial hubs now. I intend to write five Christmas gifts hubs and five hubs about writing online for money.

One of my online goals is to earn more money online from my writing so I have to put away the Irish history articles till I have the other hubs written. Mind you I am very surprised that an article I wrote on Irish female convicts transported to Australia has been earning me money.

It is part of the other fifteen Irish history articles I wrote around March and April this year. The others do very well for readership but are not making that much money yet. Maybe the reason is because the article has aged. It is all good though.

Will upload the three articles tomorrow because too tired now and that takes a few hours to do.

Day 6.

Have finished uploading the three Irish history articles I wrote yesterday. I have managed to complete seven hubs on the 1916 Easter Rising here.

I still want to write about the remaining seven men who are buried there and I have quite a few ideas for articles about the participation of the women and the young children who also fought in this Rising. You can read the hubs I have published below.

5. Joseph Plunkett was one of the executed leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising. His body dumped in a mass grave at Arbour Hill Prison yard. Joseph Plunkett married his fiancée Grace Gifford and few hours before his death in Kilmainham jail. This is their story.

6. Sean MacDermott was one of the leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising that took place in Dublin Ireland. Sean MacDermott was executed in Kilmainham Jail and his body dumped in a mass grave at Arbour Hill Prison. This is his story

7. Tom Clarke was one of the leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising. He was executed and his body dumped in a mass grave at Arbour Hill Prison. This is the story of Tom Clarke and his wife Kathleen.

Day 1.

Have to admit I slept most of the day and then had to go back to bed after just a few hours. And then I slept for a further 11 hours and 40 mins. Think it is called burn out lol.

Was quite annoyed with myself for wasting all that time asleep but sure what can you do, I suppose I needed it. I did manage to catch up on reading some of the team’s hubs though.

Day 2.

Still in burn out mode I think. My brain is refusing to work. I can’t seem to get writing again. This is not good at all. I am behind with the hubs as it is.

I am doing the Christmas hubs next so did some research on those. I also visited the forums and read and commented on other hubs from the 60dc2 team.

Day 3.

I decided to jump in and write the writing hubs next instead of the Christmas ones. I managed to publish my first writing hub today which I was very thankful about. I really need to get back in gear now because time is running out!

1. To read my hub about earn money writing articles online for HubPages then click here

Day 4.

Got three hubs published today so very happy with myself if not exhausted. As a member of the 60dc2 Team we are required to complete a summary of each group of hubs we have finished. I did this one on the Irish History Hubs.

2. To read the Summary Hub of the 1916 Easter Rising in Dublin Hubs click here.

I also managed to get two of my Christmas gift hubs published. I had done the research on these a few days ago when I could not write anymore for a while. I am pleased with the way they have turned out.

3. To read the Christmas gift hub: The new Kindle DX is available now! Click here

4. To read the Christmas gift hub: Time force watches for men: The Choice of Christiano Ronaldo! click here.

Day 5.

I finished the last two Christmas gift hubs and have them published. They took a long time because I wanted them to look good. Getting people to buy from Amazon is I believe a lot to do with presentation as well as good information.

I have achieved that with all four of the Christmas gift hubs.

5. To read the Christmas gift hub: The Apple iPad tablet PC, with Wifi. Click here.

6. To read the Christmas gift hub: A Review of the five best laptops available to buy today. Click here.

Day 6.

I spent a few hours reading the hubs of the other team members on the challenge. There really are some amazing subjects among them. I also spent longer in the 60dc2 forum.

I only managed one hub today. I thought this one would only take me a few hours but took me nearly six. So I was too tired to do any more tonight.

I have five left to do and only a few days to complete them. Not sure if I am going to make the dead line.

This hub was the required summary for the 60dc2 challenge of the Doctor Who hubs I wrote the week before last. I wish I had listened to some of the more experienced hubbers in the 60dc2 forum.

They said it was best to write the Summary Hub as soon as you finish the subjects in that category. That way they are fresh in your mind. I did not take head of this advice and that is why it took so ling to write.

7. To read the Doctor Who Summary hub for the 60dc2. Click here.

Day 7.

I have spent about 16 hours finishing the last 5 hubs for the challenge. I had a lot of the text written beforehand so was able to publish the five Writing Articles hubs last night and today.

So tired I can hardly think straight but it is a nice tired. I am delighted with my accomplishment on this challenge. The five Writing Article hubs are below.

8. Earn money writing articles online. Writing competitions on HubPages with cash prizes

9. Getting targeted traffic to your articles by joining specific Facebook Groups.

10. How to write that ‘How To’ article.

11. Writing articles online: Keep the reader interested enough to click your Google AdSense Ads

12. The 60 day challenge Summary of Writing Articles hubs.

Day 8.

I was happily reading other hubs from the team and visiting the forum. Then I read that the Summary hub should only be one hub for all the 30 hubs we wrote during the challenge. And worse still that the summary hub does not count towards the 30 hubs we are expected to write.

That meant I was 5 hubs short for the challenge and only 2 days to go! I am working on them now.

Day 9.

This is really day 10 the early hours. But I managed to get the 5 hubs done. Don’t ask me how. I worked all day and practically all night. That will teach me to read the challenge terms properly. Lol. Here are the real final 5 hubs I have written for the 60 day challenge.

13. To see a selection of inexpensive Christmas gifts for children click here

14. Buy Christmas gifts online for women: Designer bags, designer lingerie, designer jewellery.

15.Christmas gifts for men: Video games, cameras, laptops, golf and car accessories.

16. Buy that special Santa Christmas tree decoration or ornament

17. Buy Christmas trees online.

My Writing Diary completed after 60 days

The HubPages 60 day challenge has certainly been well worth taking part in and completing

With all I have learnt here at HubPages by taking part in the challenge I know now with complete confidence that my articles will continue to earn me money online here at HubPages.

Yes Lean Man I do plan on doing a hub on the history of Guinness because of their anniversary soon but not on the 60n day challenge, because it will be half history and half commercial, so you can relax for a while Lol.

Johnyater The Irish history time scale I will be concentrating on here on the 60 day challenge will be for the period of 1912 to 1923. I will be writing about 5 men and women that took part in major events during that time and their personal stories.

I look forward to working with all of you and getting to know you better.

Hi Viking! Great 60 Day Challenge hub log! I am so looking forward to reading your Irish History hubs! I love writing on line, but my first passion is historical fiction. For instance, The Pillars of the Earth. I want to write something like that one day, but history books can be dry and boring. Good luck in the challenge!

Faybe Bay thanks for reading my hublog. I am delighted you love writing and reading history. I am leaving my Irish history hubs till last. Because I know I will get too immersed in the subject. Thought I better get the other ones done first because of the time restraint.

I agree with you that history books can be dry and boring. That is why with all the history articles I write I always find the human angle and put people into the time in history I want them to experience. That way the reader cares about them and then cares about the historical events too.

callum14 yes to be honest this last week it has been a struggle for me to keep writing the hubs, but I am still going lol. Not long to go now till I finish the challenge. Only 8 more hubs to write.

Very encouraging to read this. As I struggle to get views on my hubs, I become discouraged easily and after reading this article it motivated me to try harder, write more, and promote my work. It really helps to see how the process has worked for you and encourages me to keep at it.

Voting up and sharing. Thank you!

Thank you everyone for taking the time to leave a comment.

Kim I am glad the site helps with research for your college work.

asherruth. I wrote that hub last year and I have learnt a lot more since that time. I am earning a few hundred every month now even after Panda so it has really been worth all the hard work and learning process.

The other hubbers on the challenge, especially the seasoned hubbers were a great help during my low points during that time.

Definitely keep writing and learning. The rules especially were Google is concerned change all the time but the one thing that does not change is the more quality hubs you write the more traffic and earning you will get.

Thanks for sharing too because since I start sharing other peoples work and they mine I have seen a big jump in organic traffic too.
